Arnica is a perennial herb native to central Europe and the western United States. It is also easily found in the low alpine regions of British Columbia. It contains flavonoids, volatile oil, phenolic acids, coumarins, resins, bitters, tannins, and carotenes. Arnica is used externally as a tincture, salve, poultice, or compress to promote the healing of wounds, bruises, sprains, and irritations. It helps pull out toxins from traumatized tissues, bringing new fluid to the affected area. It is commonly used by athletes to heal sore muscles. A compress can be placed on the stomach to help relieve abdominal pains. Arnica has analgesic, antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, and vulnerary properties. It cannot be taken internally or applied to open wounds.
