5 Herbs to Boost Immunity This Fall

5 Herbs to Boost Immunity This Fall

Can you feel autumn in the air? If you take the time to observe, you can see nature getting ready for the shift ahead. Animals are starting to collect and store food for the winter. In late summer, our bodies are already starting to adjust and prepare for the darker, cooler months.

Now is a great time to load up on nutrient-dense foods, get plenty of rest, and boost immunity for the cold and flu season. A well-stocked herbal pantry can be essential in safeguarding us from the sniffles!

These 5 herbs are staples for staying healthy in the Fall and Winter months. In fortifying the immune system, easing common cold & flu symptoms and speeding up recovery, each herb has something unique to offer.

Echinacea: Echinacea is a native coneflower that has been used for more than 400 years by Great Plains indigenous tribes. This powerful plant supports the immune system in defending against pathogens. It relieves coughs and sore throats and clears mucus.

Goldenseal: The roots of the Goldenseal plant contain an alkaloid called berberine, which helps fight infection and inflammation. Goldenseal is a powerful anti-microbial that balances the immune system.

Astragalus: Astragalus has been used medicinally in China for at least 2,000 years. Its immuno-modulating, antibacterial and antiviral properties make it a top preventative choice for colds and respiratory infections. Astragalus is also a potent adaptogen that helps our bodies adapt to physical and emotional stress.

Usnea: Often referred to as “Old Man’s Beard”, Usnea is a lichen native to the Pacific Northwest. It has long been used to soothe sore throats and treat lung and fungal infections. Known for its cooling and drying properties, Usnea is helpful in bringing down fever, clearing mucus, and lowering inflammation.

Reishi: Reishi is a staple in TCM, with traditional use dating back over 2,000 years. Called the “Mushroom of Immortality” for a reason, Reishi gently wakes up the immune system over time, helping to strengthen its natural defenses. Reishi provides deep immune support and aids in the relief of cold and flu symptoms, helping us recover quickly.

I don’t know a whole lot about which herbs are beneficial. Looking at your article on immune boosting herbs, how do we use these herbs. Can they be sprinkled in or on food? Do they have to be steeped in a tea?
Thank you.
