Cinnamon (Cassia) Powder - Organic
Cinnamon is one of the world's oldest spices, used for a variety of purposes in ancient Egypt and throughout the middle ages. All forms of cinnamon are produced from the dried bark of trees and shrubs of the Laurel family. It is available on the market as sticks, chips, or powder. True cinnamon, Cinnamomum zeylanicum or C. verum, is distinguished from the cinnamon more commonly available on the market, cassia cinnamon, or C. burmanii or C. cassia, in a couple of ways. The one that stands out the most is its taste: true cinnamon is considered sweeter and less spicy than its cousin, the cassia version. Also, true cinnamon contains much less coumarins than cassia cinnamon does. Coumarins are considered toxic to the body and it is generally recommended to avoid large doses of cassia cinnamon.
All forms of cinnamon contain a variety of minerals such as calcium, magnesium and potassium, and are an excellent source of fiber. They also boast many anti-microbial properties and have proven to be great preservative. Cinnamon is used to treat colds and awaken the immune system, and is believed to improve energy, vitality and circulation. Since it helps slow the rate at which your stomach digests food, it can also help with lowering blood sugar levels after eating. Cinnamon is great for baking but can also be added to curries and stews, and brewed into teas or mulled wine.
