Good News: Our B Corp Score Has Improved!

Good News: Our B Corp Score Has Improved!

Elizabeth Ferns |

We’re thrilled to announce that we have recently been recertified as a B Corporation, and our score jumped from 83.6 to 92.4!

Breaking Down our NEW B Impact Score

The B Impact Score is made up of five pillars: Governance, Environment, Workers, Community, and Customers. Each section below details the improvements we’ve made to increase our score.

Governance – Overall Score of 13.3

Harmonic Arts is committed to upholding high ethical standards while promoting a culture of integrity throughout the organization. We promote transparency, accountability, and effective decision-making at all levels of the organization, which helps to build trust and confidence among employees, customers, and other stakeholders.

Our mission is to cultivate healthier communities and deepen the connection between people and the planet by providing effective and easy-to-use herbal products that empower everyone on their path to wellness. Since this Impact Business Model is designed to cultivate a positive outcome for the health of our customers, community, and planet, we earned a Mission Lock within the governance pillar of our assessment. This is a requirement for all certified B Corporations and worth 10 points of our score.

Environment – Overall score of 26.3

Harmonic Arts has been certified Green for the last four years in a row through BC Green Business, and we have been Climate Smart Certified since October 2022. Achieving these certifications involves measuring our greenhouse gas emissions, crafting goals to reduce them, and taking action to meet those goals.

We recently did a deep review of our product and operational packaging and considered how we might reduce the environmental footprint of this aspect of our business. This led us to these accomplishments:

  • Our Operations team replaced single-use pallet wrap in our manufacturing facility with a reusable alternative for 99% of our operations.
  • We updated our Herbal Latte packaging to reduce the amount of material used. This decision was more cost-efficient and less carbon-intensive, lowering the amount of greenhouse gas emissions per shipment.
  • We modified our product offering and have diverted 72,238 lbs of single-use packaging waste as a result.

We track our carbon emissions and continuously work to reduce our footprint, from
optimizing shipping to offering carbon-neutral options for our customers. By supporting green initiatives, we strive to create a positive environmental impact.

Workers – Overall score of 24.9

To prevent burnout within our team, we provide programs and resources that support their well-being, including:

  • A flexible benefits plan that supports health spending and lifestyle spending.
  • An Employee & Family Assistance Program.
  • Daily exercises for manufacturing staff.
  • Quarterly product giveaways for staff.
  • A quarterly employee-nominated charitable giving program.
  • A minimum of 3 weeks paid vacation and paid time off over the Christmas holidays.
  • 8 paid hours annually to volunteer with causes that align with our company values.

Community – Overall score of 19.6

We regularly contribute in-kind, volunteer, and monetary charitable donations that offer substantial support to value-aligned social and environmental initiatives. We sponsor events and organizations like Cumberland Fungus Fest, Vancouver Island Herb Gathering, LUSH Valley Food Action Society, and Second Harvest, to name a few.

When it comes to our supply chain, we've proudly built ethical and sustainable partnerships. When vetting suppliers, we screen for third-party impact certifications (such as Certified Organic or Fair-Trade ingredients), locally and independently owned businesses, and BIPOC-owned businesses. Our supplier code of conduct requires compliance with best practices for fair labour (including fair compensation and safe working conditions), compliance with applicable environmental laws, respect for animal welfare, and traceability, responsibility, and transparency of product contents. We believe that this is integral to creating a positive ripple effect of sustainable practices.

Customers – Overall score of 8.1

With around half of our sales coming from products that have Natural Product Numbers (NPNs), we’re actively nurturing the wellness of our customers. NPNs are issued by Health Canada to indicate that a natural health product has been assessed and found to be safe, effective, and of high quality. This means the product has undergone testing and that every health claim we make about the product is supported by scientific evidence. These include our Mushroom Powders, Capsules, and Tinctures, along with our Restorative Herbal Capsules, Herbal Tincture Blends, and most of our Single Herb Tinctures and Syrups.
