Herbs & Mushrooms for Wildfire Season

Canadians are no strangers to wildfires, especially during the summer. We typically experience them between late April to September, with a peak during the drier months of June and July. The Canadian Climate Institute reminds us that wildfires cause damage to more than just our forests. The smoke from a fire can spread across thousands of kilometres, bringing dangerous levels of particulate matter with it. This increases the risk of breathing difficulty for those with asthma and other lung conditions and can be a great source of stress for vulnerable populations. It’s important to be prepared, not just with your home and your loved ones, but with your own wellness.

Supportive Herbs During Wildfire Season

Chaga

Chaga is considered a nutrient-dense superfood. It’s packed with over 200 phytonutrients, essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that protect our DNA. The potent polyphenol compounds protect our cells against free radical damage, including exposure to wildfire smoke. This promotes cell function and overall vitality (1). Chaga has also been shown to fortify the immune system and soothe inflammation (2).

Easily add this functional mushroom to your wellness routine with our Chaga Mushroom Capsules, or our Chaga Tea.

Cordyceps

This functional mushroom is a well-known energy and endurance booster, and in TCM, cordyceps is seen as a guardian of respiratory health (3). Studies show that cordyceps can increase V02 max, which refers to the maximum amount of oxygen you can utilize during exercise (4). This mushroom can also support those with asthma by soothing inflammation and easing tracheal contractions (5).

Feel the benefits of this functional mushroom with our potent and easy-to-use Cordyceps Mushroom Capsules.

Bladderwrack

Bladderwrack is a nutrient-rich herb that’s packed with iodine and antioxidants. Sea veggies such as this support the body’s ability to flush out heavy metals and protect against environmental toxins such as wildfire smoke (6). In a study done to assess the antioxidant levels of brown seaweed varieties, bladderwrack was shown to have the highest free radical scavenging activity, along with the highest antioxidant capacity (7).

Find bladderwrack within our Bio-Shield Tincture Blend, formulated with antioxidant-rich herbs to help combat pollution.

Mullein

This herbal ally is traditionally used in herbal medicine to help relieve symptoms of upper-respiratory tract infections and bronchitis thanks to its soothing, anti-inflammatory properties. Mullein contains compounds that have been shown to promote lung function, ease congestion, and open airways, making it an excellent herb to have on hand during wildfire season (8).

Find mullein in our Breathe Herbal Artisan Tea, formulated with organic, aromatic herbs.
